Transmission, will not shift from 2nd to 3rd gear, AOD automatic. My transmission will not shift from second gear to third gear. It goes beautifully from first to second and then it just stays in second. If I drive long enough, about 15 minutes, the vehicle, still in second gear, will begin not to catch, then not catch at all. Step on the gas and you get nothing, but the engine is revving up while the transmission slips completely, while still in second gear. If I roll to a stop stopping the vehicle, then step on the gas, the transmission will then catch again immediately.
I can go through first, then second and will not shift any further, and soon it will again disengage. The cycle will repeat itself, with the engine eventually begins to overheat.
The catalytic converter was installed where it actually touches the side of the transmission valve body area. Could that cause the transmission to overheat? Also there were a lot of metal shavings in the pan when I removed it.
I did change the fluid and added a lubricant, it did not work. If the catalytic converter is touching the transmission and it heats the fluid, that is a possible explanation of why, as I drive, the fluid heats up to where it is causing total slippage? But, if I stop for a second and then take off again, first and second work fine, but it still will not shift to third, and the time between stops becomes shorter, the engine gets hotter, until I am revving the engine with minimal result and third still will not commit.
I do not push it any further. How serious is the cat touching the transmission scenario? I assume I should fix that. I was told the metal shavings could be the cause of the valve sticking? I have the valve body out and was going to remove, clean and replace? Images Click to enlarge. Do you. The catalytic converter touching the transmission is pretty serous I would not want that on my transmission.
What I would worry about is were is the shavings coming from? Also you say it stops moving in second gear, that also sounds like a major problem.
I would do a pressure test, but the transmission has to be together. The shavings in the valve body is the least of your trouble because you will never get all the shavings out of the torque converter. You can see if the shavings are in the valve body they could really be anywhere depends where they ended up at, but it sounds like the transmission is having a internal failure.
Here is a link to an article from this site that will show you how to run further diagnostic test on your transmission. Was this answer. My Ford-F had this same problem. I would get the catalytic converter fixed right away. That ended up being the source of my issues. As soon as I got it moved and changed some sensors, it shifted beautifully. My truck would stay in third gear for months i replaced the tran fluid and the filter but nothing would happen, my trucj would make weird nouses like it didnt wanna shift then after my changing the fluid one time the trans stayed in third gear and would not come out untill i unplugged the batter and figured out it was stuck in limp mode, what do i need to replace so it dosent do that again?
The transmission could have an issue with the shift solenoids. Check the wiring harness to the transmission case and make sure that it is plugged in. It is common for the electrical harness in the transmission to short out. I recommend checking the harness inside the transmission for continuity and if the resistance is too high or an open circuit, then replace the harness inside the transmission.
If the harness is good, then it is possible that both the shift solenoids A and B have failed and need replaced. If you need further assistance with your transmission stuck in limp mode, then seek out a professional, such as one from Your Mechanic, to help you. The Most Common Reasons Why a Transmission Slips
Transmissions and Drivetrains. Mazda Millenia. OBD Diagnostic Codes. Why wont your automatic transmission shift into third gear? Wiki User Depending on the vehicle, lets say you own a Chrysler, the electronic transmission has a mode referred to as "limp in" mode. Your vehicle will run only in second, or maybe third gear transmission.
In most cases, if there is something mechanically wrong with your tranny, you will hear it or feel it, or have total failure. In the case of an electronic problem, the check engine light accompanied by the inability to shift through the gears could be due to a faulty governer pressure sensor and or solenoid. Occasionally with Chrysler electronic trannys, the solenoid gets frozen and will not engage with the correct force.
Fault code will indicate Governer pressure sensor voltage too low, etc. This can be remedied easily by purchasing the parts over the internet and dropping the transmission pan, removing the valve body, and replacing the two parts.
Related Questions Asked in Honda Why would a automatic gear shift stick? An automatic transmission can lock in a Honda for several reasons.
The most common problem is with the shift solenoids. These parts allow the transmission to shift and when one is malfunctioning the gearbox may not go into gear. If your gear shift is freezing it could be because your clutch is not longer working. If you have an automatic then your transmission may be slipping.
Asked in Nissan Frontier What causes the automatic transmission to shift hard from first to second gear on a Nissan Frontier? A bad transmission gear can cause your Nissan frontier to shift hard. Low transmission fluid can also cause the transmission to shift hard.
Asked in Oldsmobile Aurora If its not the shift solenoids what could prevent the transmission from shifting into third gear and overdrive? If your transmission is not shifting into third gear and overdrive it could be a parking pawl. This prevents the transmission from rotating. There are several causes that an automatic transmission will not want to shift into second gear.
The two most common causes are transmission pump issues and trouble with the vacuum modulator. Asked in Toyota Avalon Toyota Avalon automatic will not shift to third gear when cold? Are you sure that it's third it's not shifting into, and not fourth? The transmission is designed to not permit shifts into fourth overdrive until the engine and transmission have warmed up a bit.
In automatic transmissions the second to third syncronizers always seem to go bad first, the syncronizers are worn, bad or gone. This is common in these transmissions.Maplestory epic potential scroll reboot

Sometimes it will shift if I build up enough speed going down a hill and let it drift without giving it any gas for a good distance, and than sometimes not. Once it shifts into 3RD it always shifts into 4TH just fine. There is no CEL on.
I had a shop road test it with a computer and they said the trucks computer is calling for 3RD and 4TH gear but it was not shifting. I was told it could be a solenoid not activating or just hanging up. Could this be the problem? If so, where could I find a diagram of the solenoids, which is which, and how do I go about testing them? I was planning to change the filter and fluid this spring any way.

Check the wires and make sure they are not full of corrision or anything. SUV will not downshift. I had a complete tune up now wont downshift. What else could the problem be?
Was your mechanic able to see if there is any codes in the system? It is possible it may have got disconnected when he did the tune up. Since it started after he did the tune up. Before he did the tune up it was bogging down. The plugs were shot and wires bad and it was running on only five cylinders. He did replace the four wheel drive control module before that.A transmission is a complex piece of machinery the runs of lots of complicated mechanisms.
Upkeep and maintenance of these machines are tricky since the glitch with a tiny component can mess up with the gearbox. Functional auto gearbox will shift up, down, and rest upon appropriate commands.
But, when it fails to do so, there must be an internal hitch affecting the performance. If you ignore the signs for too long, it could lead to a possible failure of the transmission. Overheating could be a reason for the gear to stick and the low fluid level is the culprit for making the transmission overheated. Actually, low fluid levels are the source of several transmission-related issues.
So, your first response to the gear-sticking problem should be to check the transmission oil. If the level is low, check for a leak in the input and output shaft seal, fluid lines, pan gasket, and the cooler. If there is no leak, flush out the old oil and refill the container. Sometimes, the cooler inside the radiator can leak and spoil the radiator coolant.
A defective cable with excessive slack is likely to create issues with smooth shifting of the gears.Kohler sv590s
It may also totally stall the shifting. A faulty PCM powertrain control module will affect the transmission performance because it controls the gearbox mechanism in most car models. The PCM will have no input if the speed sensor fails. In that case, the transmission will not shift properly. To solve this problem, you have to check the speedometer to see that it is functioning.
Otherwise, replacing the VSS could be the solution. Tsukasa Azuma is an awesome car blogger of Car From Japan. He owns a car repair shop at downtown Osaka, and he put all that experience to good use in his sharing posts.

Step 1 - Clear all DTC's with a engine scan tool diagnostic trouble codes. Visit - Scan PCM. Step 2 - Start the engine and observe the MIL, if it does not illuminate continue to next step service engine soon or check engine light.
Step 3 - Drive the vehicle while trying to maintain a constant throttle position as it accelerates up through all four gears. If the transmission is shifting properly, it should be in 4th gear by the time you reach 45 to 50 mph on level ground. Repeat this procedure from a standing start 3 to 5 times. Rescan the PCM for trouble codes, if none appear the problem could have been a onetime occurrence.
If a trouble code has returned repair as needed and recheck system. A common complaint with automatic transmissions is them leaking fluid. Leaks can occur from the output shaft seal, input shaft seal, pan gasket, fluid cooler or lines. When adding transmission fluid, do not overfill, doing so could cause the fluid to become aerated which will affect transmission operation. If the fluid level is low with no visible leaks, check the radiator for fluid in the coolant.
The cooler inside the radiator may be leaking and cross-contaminating the radiator coolant the coolant will be milky pink. Also check the condition of the fluid, some discoloration and darkening is normal as the fluid ages, but if the fluid is brown or has a burnt smell its badly overused and a transmission service is needed.
Most transmission problems can be prevented by changing the fluid and filter if applicable according to manufacturer specifications. In extreme conditions installing an aftermarket auxiliary cooler parallel can be installed furthering the cooling effect. This prevents fluid overheating on vehicles used for towing or performance applications. Automatic transmissions make specific noises when a malfunction occurs.
An automatic transmission is a hydraulic pressure driven system that can make different noises than manual transmission problems.
